I enjoy this game and will happily play it if people want to. They need to give 1 word clues that lead their team to their color words, while avoiding the opposing team’s words and the insta-lose Assassin word. Each team has a “codemaster” and they can both see a grid card, where certain spots on that card are their team’s color and correspond to words on the board. It doesn’t need much introduction, but just in case: there’s a 5x5 grid of words. 8/10Ĭodenames - This is the one that started it all. It can be a bit slow paced waiting for everyone to write a response, and handwriting can kill it (if the manager of the round trips over a word, that one is clearly wrong), but it’s a lot of fun when everything goes smoothly. The current editions include a lot of categories beyond just obscure words, like movie plots and weird laws. This game can be hilarious and has a lot of room for creativity, similar to Say Anything with its open-ended responses. Each person scores for how many people choose their answer, for choosing the dictionary definition correctly, and - rarely - for writing a definition close to the real definition. Collect all the definitions and read them out, then each person chooses which they think is real. Then, each person comes up with a potential definition, while the person managing the game that round rewrites the real definition. In the basic version, an obscure word is read to everyone. It’s very basic, but it’s a twist on the reaction-based party game and I prefer it to stuff like ERS/Jungle Speed. The categories are deliberately not too hard, which makes it even funnier how tongue tied people can get. When the face-up cards of two different players match symbols, each matching player has to look at their opponent’s card’s category and say something that matches the fastest. These cards have symbols and word categories on them (for example, a card might be symbol # and say “US PRESIDENT”). It’s kind of like slapping card games, because each turn players turn over new cards and react to matches. I presented them in alphabetical order here, so the first couple aren't heavy hitters these days.Īnomia - This is a classic party game based on how hard it is to think of words quickly. I’ve played and enjoyed a lot of them, as well as enjoying a lot of word-based games that predate Codenames - so I figured I would provide some quick reviews of the ones I’ve played, as people here seem to find these reviews across categories of games useful. There have been a lot of word games recently, basically coming in a wave since Codenames.
